Raise Your Voice — Again — for Richardson Grove Redwoods!

Here we go again. Caltrans is back with another attempt to push through their Richardson Grove Project: They seek to “realign” the curvy Hwy 101 through the ancient redwoods of this 99-year old State Park to provide access for more and bigger trucks through the redwoods. This is one of those issues it seems we have won over and over, and yet…here we are. In 2017, the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) completed an Addendum to their Final Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the project. This addendum document, along with the 2010 EIR and other background material, is now open …

New Logging Plan in Mattole Threatens Owl Habitat, Redwood Park, Native Forests and Ancestral Indigenous Land.

Please send comments! Time is short, but this is important and you can take action in just a few minutes. Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC) has filed a new Timber Harvest Plan (THP) located in the headwaters of the upper north fork of the Mattole River. The areas slated to be logged and herbicided lie directly adjacent to Humboldt Redwood State Park, within the ancestral territory of the Bear River Band. The public comment period will close on September 2. A multitude of comments will make it clear to Calfire and to HRC how much the community values this forest. While …

Logging has started in State forest!

We were in the middle of writing an alert about threatened logging in the beautiful Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF) on Mendocino’s coast when we got word that LOGGING STARTED THIS MORNING! This, despite the fact that protesters, tree-sitters and the public are in the forest. Activists working to preserve the integrity of the forest are urging people to take a few minutes to send a short email that you can either cut and paste from below, or simply click on the “send to” address (santarosapubliccomments@fire.ca.gov), and an email message will pop up already filled out with the message and …

31st anniversary of the bombing of Judi Bari & Darryl Cherney: Monday, May 24 JOIN US!

Marking milestones and honoring fallen warriors The 31st anniversary of the dramatic and aggressive bombing of Earth First! organizers Judi Bari and Darryl Cherney is upon us: May 24, 2021. In years past, Judi’s comrades in the Bay Area commemorate that event every year by going to the place where the bomb exploded under Judi’s car seat as she drove through Oakland, to mark the moment, as well as bringing people together for discussions of radical activism and solidarity, and as a memory against forgetting. This year, we can again invite you to join us in person! (Please observe covid …

Tree-Sits, Blockades and Forestry Science vs. California “Demonstrating” Profitability?

49,000 acres of recovering vibrant forest with large redwoods and other species, south of Fort Bragg on the Mendocino coast were purchased by the state of California in 1949, after having been logged in previous years. Its mission was to serve the purpose of the state operating a “Demonstration Forest” to practice and document sustainable forest management and logging, preserving water quality, and high quality habitat, as well as recreational uses. However, local environmental groups are raising an alarm that new proposed logging plans are contrary to anyone’s definition of restoration forestry, and rather reek of industrial logging in the …

Viva! Jene! and Redwood Groves Saved

Last week we lost a force of nature, and one who has been involved in all manner of ecological issues on the northcoast for decades. Yurok elder Jene McCovey has certainly been very involved since long before she was an elder. It seemed that Jene was everywhere people were getting together to strategize on a myriad of issues. She showed up to testify at public hearings, to speak into a bullhorn or mic at rallies, and would show up at demonstrations out in the forest, treating her motorized wheelchair like a high-end off road vehicle. She was fearless. I first …

2020 in the rearview mirror, almost…

Dear Friends of Wild Nature Everywhere, From my experience, we are all likely to get a whole pile of letters this season, as the end of the year draws near, as “giving Tuesday” approaches. Letters that start with a version of “Well, 2020 has been quite a year…” And it’s true! Whatever we are doing to get by, whatever causes we are passionate about and that move us to action—the context of 2020 affects us all profoundly.  A global pandemic stampedes into its ninth month; there are righteous uprisings in the streets across the nation in response to systemic and …

Appeals Court Rules Against Richardson Grove Champions

We are beyond disappointed at a decision handed down on Dec. 2 by the Ninth Circuit regarding a controversial highway project through a grove of ancient redwood trees, reversing a lower court ruling that halted planned construction. The trees are part of Richardson Grove State Park, established in 1922 to protect the ancient redwoods that are as high as 300 feet and can be as old as 3,000 years. A panel of three judges, one a Trump appointee, reversed a District Court’s previous ruling in favor of the environmental plaintiffs, pending further environmental impact assessment. Caltrans, the California state transportation …
