Calls & emails needed to stop the “Red Tail” Massacre Last Thursday, logging crews re-entered the “Red Tail” timber harvest plan (THP) in Jackson Demonstration State Forest in Mendocino County, to cut large trees on public lands despite a pending review of the management plan. Forest Defenders met them in the woods, and returned again Friday to keep the big old trees at Red Tail from being cut. Here we go again. Caltrans is back with another attempt to push through their Richardson Grove Project: They seek to “realign” the curvy Hwy 101 through the ancient redwoods of this 99-year old State Park to provide access for more and bigger trucks through the redwoods. This is one of those issues it seems we have won over and over, and yet…here we are. Humboldt Redwood Company (HRC) has filed a new Timber Harvest Plan (THP) located in the headwaters of the upper north fork of the Mattole River. The areas slated to be logged and herbicided lie directly adjacent to Humboldt Redwood State Park, within the ancestral territory of the Bear River Band. We were in the middle of writing an alert about threatened logging in the beautiful Jackson Demonstration State Forest (JDSF) on Mendocino’s coast when we got word that LOGGING STARTED THIS MORNING! 49,000 acres of recovering vibrant forest with large redwoods and other species, south of Fort Bragg on the Mendocino coast were purchased by the state of California in 1949, after having been logged in previous years. Appeals Court Rules Against Richardson Grove Champions

We are beyond disappointed at a decision handed down on Dec. 2 by the Ninth Circuit regarding a controversial highway project through a grove of ancient redwood trees, reversing a lower court ruling that halted planned construction. The trees are part of Richardson Grove State Park, established in 1922 to protect the ancient redwoods that are as high as 300 feet and can be as old as 3,000 years.
