The Bay Area Forest Activist

BOOKS...that you may want to know about...

July 1, 2004

Only one of these is just-published, but if your interest is piqued by this newsletter, you'll love these books...
Totem Salmon, Life Lessons From Another Species
by Freeman House
A beautifully written....well, love story, really, about the salmon of the north coast rivers presented by a Mattole watershed resident who has long worked to preserve and restore their habitat. Through the evocative prose, you are there, in the middle of the night when the river rises and the salmon arrive, in the cold dark pool as the salmon eggs are deposited in the concave depression carved out by the strong trail of the female salmon. Gary Snyder says, "A grave and delightful book, both personal and cosmic."
Beacon Press, 1999 www.beacon.org
Two kid books:
Salmon Stream (ages 6-12) and the Tree in the Ancient Forest (ages 4-10)
Both by Carol Reed-Jones, illustrations by Michael S. Maydak and Christopher Canyon respectively
Lively prose, rich imagery and illustrations take children on a journey to understand and feel in fellowship with their fellow species. Salmon Stream highly recommended for classroom use by eminent biologists.
Dawn Publications, 2000, 1995 www.dawnpub.com
A Good Forest for Dying
by Patrick Beach
This Austin newspaper reporter was covering the tragic death of fellow Texan David Gypsy Chain, who was killed when an angry Pacific Lumber logger felled a giant tree on top of him in September of 1998. Beach became so taken with the story and the characters that he wrote a book. It covers some history of the long battle for the redwoods, many interviews with people close to Gypsy and previously untold stories about the personal journey of David Gypsy Chain.
Doubleday Books, 2003
Sockeye Salmon, A Pictorial Tribute
Photographs by Hiromi Naito
I found this in an obscure used book store, so do not know how available it is, but the photos are stunning, delicious and exciting. They tell the story of the salmon beautifully and elegantly. It is on our bookshelf, so you can come by the BACH office and check it out.
The Mountaineers and Greystone Books, 1995
The first three books, along with Derrick Jensen's books,
mentioned elsewhere in the newsletter,
are available at the Ecology Center store in Berkeley (see Directory.)
