Headwaters Forest Reserve

Isn’t Headwaters Forest saved?
Back to Topic | Top of Page

Throughout the highly visible, very political campaign to save Headwaters Forest that started when Texas-based Maxxam Corp. took over Pacific Lumber in 1985, we called for the preservation of sufficient forest to ensure the preservation of healthy fisheries, endangered species habitat and intact old growth forest ecosystems. By our and biologists’ reckoning, that would be approximately 60,000 acres. The Headwaters Deal provided for transfer to public hands of just less than 7,500 acres (half old growth and half cut over) and also temporarily protected (but left in Maxxam/PL hands) approximately 6,600 acres of fragmented old growth redwood groves as 50 year set-asides. So it was precious and valuable redwood forest that was saved in 1999 via the Headwaters Deal, but Headwaters Grove (turned into the Headwaters Reserve) is but a portion of the forest needed for the species to survive in the long term. Please see the other sections for a more in-depth overview.

About BACH
  1. Why are you in the Bay Area and not in the forest area?

Why are you in the Bay Area and not in the forest area?
Back to Topic | Top of Page

We established BACH in the Bay Area at the height of the Headwaters campaign in the early 90’s because we needed an organizing base in the population center for the growing campaign, and because there were many people in the Bay Area looking for ways to plug in to forest activism who needed a place to connect to the issues and the people. Since then, we find that our close relationship with the rural grassroots groups on the northcoast is a valuable connection we can bring to Bay Area activists that benefits both urban dwellers and those rural groups who deserve more visibility.

Subscribing to Updates

There are two basic ways to automatically stay current with BACH's updates:
  1. Subscribe to our e-mail list for all-inclusive updates
  2. Syndicate the Newsroom and Events using a news reader
What's the difference? Well, our e-mail list is an all-in-one, comprehensive update listserve. Any and all updates (including Action Alerts, general Updates, Events, and possibly other bits of info) are emailed out about every two weeks or whenever the information is ready to distribute. Our RSS feeds offer a little more flexibility as to the content you receive: you can sign up for one channel and skip the rest; choose any combination of channels; or syndicate the entire Newsroom in one channel. The e-mail list is delivered to your inbox, RSS feeds are aggregated by your feed reader.

The Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters Forest (BACH) sends out alerts and updates about once every two weeks (depending on what's going on). These alerts are directly related to Headwaters and forest preservation in Northern California. This list is powered by Sympa.org and hosted by RiseUp.net.

After you subscribe/unsubscribe, you will receive an email confirming your request. If you are subscribing to the list, you will have to reply to the email you receive in order to become a confirmed subscriber. The email will be from "SYMPA" and will contain the subject, "auth # subscribe bach" (the number symbol represents a series of letters and numbers unique to your address). If you are selective about the emails you receive, be sure to add the domain "lists.riseup.net" to your allowed list before you subscribe. If you are unsubscribing, you will simply receive a confirmation that you are no longer on the list. Re-subscribing is easy — just come back to any of our pages and sign up.

If you have any problems with this list, there is some information that may be found at RiseUp.net's list help section. If you continue to have any problems with this list, please let our know.

Remember, if your email address has special security measures in place to protect you from spam, you may need to add the following email addresses to your database of allowed emails before you will receive any of the necessary emails required for subscription and unsubscription: bach@lists.riseup.net and sympa@lists.riseup.net.

RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually.
— Wikipedia, wikipedia.org

RSS (often referred to as Really Simple Syndication) is a format used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts. An RSS document is called a feed or channel and contains either a summary of content from an associated web site or the full text. RSS makes it possible for people to keep up with their favorite web sites in an automated manner that's easier than checking them manually. RSS content can be read using software commonly called feed readers or aggregators. The user subscribes to a feed by manually entering the internet link into the reader or by clicking a specified link in a browser that initiates the subscription process. The RSS reader automatically checks the user's subscribed feeds regularly for new content and downloads any updates that it finds. — Wikipedia [adapted]

Most modern browsers, like the latest version of Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer, or Safari, will have an internal aggregator with which to read and manage your RSS feed subscriptions.

Alternatively, you can search for and download any number of free RSS readers from the internet. Google Reader is an example of a web-based application.

To subscribe via this method, all you have to do is click specially marked links on web pages offering RSS channels. If you are using a browser with an internal aggregator or if you are using a special feed reader, the software will recognize the file, display its contents, and prompt you to subscribe.

BACH's RSS Channels

Using a news reader, it is possible to syndicate any of the following channels in our newsroom: We also have a separate channel for upcoming events:

Basic browser requirements
Back to Topic | Top of Page

To be able to see and use this website, we recommend using the latest version of Firefox, Opera, Netscape, Internet Explorer or other comparable browser with JavaScript turned on and the latest Adobe Flash Player installed. If for some reason you are unable to download or install a newer browser, or if you choose to turn off JavaScript and/or Flash in your modern browser, this website will still be accessible. However, some features will be unavailable to you. In most cases, an alternative will be displayed.

Turning on JavaScript and Flash
Back to Topic | Top of Page

We use JavaScript on this web site for a couple of essential elements — namely, Flash Player detection and e-mail address encryption.

Our use of Flash includes an array of stylized forms that accomplish a variety of tasks, such as subscription management, online giving, and site/web search. We also embed a Flash photo slideshow in our photo gallery. With a few exceptions — the e-mail form on the contact page, the photo slideshow,* and the news ticker at the top of each page — the Flash-based features on this site are available in other formats to accomodate all users. If you want to access these exceptions, you will need to install the latest version of Adobe Flash Player.

*The photo slideshow is available in a non-Flash format on the Flickr website. Use the link provided on the photo gallery page to see this version.

Adobe Flash Player is the high-performance, lightweight, highly expressive client runtime that delivers powerful and consistent user experiences across major operating systems, browsers, mobile phones, and devices.
— Adobe, adobe.com

You may need to turn JavaScript on to access the more advanced features of this web site, especially in either of these cases: a) if you have Flash Player disabled (or if it is not installed) and you want a clickable e-mail address for us, and b) if you have JavaScript turned off and you are not sure if you have Flash Player.

We also recommend installing the latest Adobe Flash Player, available from the Flash Player Download Center.

Downloading Flash Player only takes about three minutes on a 56k modem and is well worth the wait. With an updated Flash Player, you will be able to see and use the more advanced features on this website.

If you don't see any notices on our website telling you to turn JavaScript on or asking you to install Flash Player, you probably don't need to worry about this. However, if you do see these notices and you choose not to install/enable, this website will still work for you, though you may not be able to access a clickable e-mail address for us or use some of the more advanced features.

Instructions for turning JavaScript on can be found in your browser's help files. Instructions for downloading and installing Flash Player are on the Flash Player Download Center web site.

If you'd rather keep JavaScript turned off and Flash disabled/uninstalled, but still want our e-mail address, just call us directly at 510/548.3113.
