Special Notice
from the Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters
December 11, 2006

Since many of you on our list live in the Bay Area, we are sending this notice, not about the old growth forests in northern California, but about grandmother trees right here in our close by back yard.
There is a grove of beautiful old live oak trees on the UC Berkeley campus that UCB regents in their (lack of) wisdom are planning to level, to expand the university's sport stadium. These trees have massive, spreading branches, and the grove includes a couple redwoods and cedars as well, making a small biological oasis in the ever-expanding campus development. The City of Berkeley, students, major environmental organizations and neighbors all oppose the cutting of the oaks, and the issue has heated up considerably in the last couple weeks. A week and a half ago, several people, including activist Zachary Running Wolf, who ran for Berkeley mayor, climbed up into the high branches and have been there since. A tree sit here in Berkeley!
You are encouraged to come out and visit the grove and show your support for the protest. People are there 24 hours a day, with an information table and friendly tree-sitters. The grove is on Piedmont Avenue, just north of Bancroft Ave. and the International House. There is a public event planned for Saturday, Dec. 16. We will post details soon. You can get more information at www.SaveOaks.com or by sending an email to volunteer@saveoaks.com. They need non-perishable food (organic preferred), tarps and monetary donations.
These trees are beautiful last remnants and are irreplaceable! Help build the movement, not a stadium!
