Tree-Sitter Marks Six Months in the "Jerry" Tree - Activist's Feet Have Not Touched the Ground Once 5-11-04 For Immediate Release - Contact: May 11, 2004 For immediate release May 11th, 2004 Contact: Willow NCEF! Media (707) 268-5613 Tree-Sitter Marks Six Months in the "Jerry" Tree Activist's Feet Have Not Touched the Ground Once Freshwater, CA - An Earth First! activist going by the name "Willow" is celebrating his six-month anniversary in the "Jerry" tree on Greenwood Heights Road in the Freshwater Creek watershed. Willow has survived the elements, and continues to hold vigil up in the "Jerry" tree, determined to protect the old growth Redwood from Maxxam Corp./Pacific Lumber Co., who intend to cut it down although the ownership is in dispute. "Jerry" is the that forest activist "Remedy" sat in for nearly a year, before she was forcibly removed in March of 2003, just four days before her one-year anniversary in the tree, by Maxxam/PL-hired climbers, namely Eric Schatz and Co. The climbers cut off nearly all of the tree's limbs, leaving a scarred trunk of a tree, yet North Coast Earth First! activists were still able to replace the platforms up in the tree, and more forest defenders were able to climb up and continue to defend this tree. Despite Maxxam/PL/Eric Schatz's efforts to cut the "Jerry" tree down, activists have been able to hold them off, and so Jerry still stands to this day. Maxxam/PL has still not been able to show ownership of the area, which has been challenged in court, and no deed has been provided by Pacific Lumber Co. Upon researching the area in the Humboldt County Recorder's office shows a map of McKinleyville, a town several miles to the north of the area in question. "My name is Willow and I have protected this Ancient Redwood for six months without touching ground," said the tree-sitter. "My friend, Remedy, sat in this tree, for nearly a year before she was extracted. In her honor I will not stand by and watch 1,200 years of life fall to Maxxam Corporation." There will be a rally on Sunday, May 16, from noon- 4 p.m., at the turnout just above Jerry, at 1.7 miles up Greenwood Heights Road. There will be a shuttle bus leaving from the parking lot across from the Three Corners Market , near the junction of Old Arcata Road and Freshwater Road, due to the limited parking space on Greenwood Heights Road. Speakers include Native American activist Jene McCovey and tree-sitter Remedy . ### ![]() << Back to Press Release Archive | Latest Press Release | Newsroom ![]() Subscribe Get action alerts, updates, and other important news in your email inbox by signing up with your email address here: ![]() Learn more about events | See the BACHList FAQ |
