UCB Oak Grove Arrests Today

Oak Grove Activists Plant Native Oak on Chancellor's Lawn

Berkeley, CA-Defenders of the Oak Grove on University of California (UCB) campus that the University wants to deccimate planted an oak seedling, sprouted from one of old coast live oaks in the grove and collected last fall, on the lawn of Chancellor Robert Birgeneau. Chancellor Birgeneau's residence is on Hearst St., just east of LeConte on the north side of UCB campus. Birgeneau has been a strong proponent of the siting of the sports facility development that the University wants to build on the oak grove site, despite widespread community opposition and other viable sites.

Six people--four women and two men were arrested at the oak seedling planting, including People's Park Advisory Board member Terri Compost, UCB graduate Kingman Lim, and Berkeley Grandmothers for the Oaks activist Beverly Dove. The seedling, nurtured from an acorn that was part of the acorn drop from one of the oldest trees in the Grove, one called the Grandmother Tree, was collected last fall.

Judge Barbara Miller of Alameda County Superior Court is expected to issue her final ruling as to whether the University can proceed with their bulldozing of the grove in the next few days, after UCB made concessions in their planning documents the court found fault with, even though those changes fly in the face of building codes and the advice of UCB's own engineers concerning building in the Hayward fault earthquake zone.

The planting took place at about 5 p.m., followed by arrests one half to one hour later. Activists remain on site.
