Save the Oaks 24-Hour Community Tree Sit-in, Memorial Oak Grove, Berkeley 2-14-2007 For Immediate Release - Contact: Doug Buckwald 510-599-0044 Memorial Oak Grove, Berkeley : Thurs 9am - Fri 9am) Berkeley, Calif. - The Save the Memorial Oaks Coalition is organizing a "24 Hour Community Tree Sit-in" at the Memorial Oak Grove near California Memorial Stadium (on Piedmont Ave just north of Bancroft) in order to show the broad community support for the oaks and community opposition to UC Berkeley's plan for an expanded sports facility on the site of the grove of heritage oaks. A wide range of students, faculty, alumni, and citizens will participate in the event, joining tree-sitters who have been perched on platforms in the trees since Dec. 2. The event will proceed as follows: * Thursday, Feb. 15, 9am - Press Conference, participating tree-sitters will be available for interviews. * Thursday, 10am until Friday at 9am - Students, faculty, and members of the community will all take turns (either 30 minutes or 1 hour at a time) sitting in an oak tree. Our membership supports the tree sitters staying "as long as it takes" to save the trees. Although a preliminary injunction was recently granted, the University still says it intends to cut down the trees to build their facility. Detailed press release to follow. ### ![]() << Back to Press Release Archive | Latest Press Release | Newsroom ![]() Subscribe Get action alerts, updates, and other important news in your email inbox by signing up with your email address here: ![]() Learn more about events | See the BACHList FAQ |
